The Computer Languages and System Software Group (CLaSS) in the Computing Research Division (CRD) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is hiring for a Group Lead.
The group’s mission is to research, design, and implement new models, features and optimizations of parallel programming languages and their execution environments for leading-edge High Performance Computing (HPC) systems. Research topics include but are not limited to design, implementation and optimization of parallel programming languages, compilers, operating systems, and advanced communication and run-time libraries. This builds on the group’s long history of leadership in this area with the development of the GASNet communication library, UPC programming language, UPC++ library, data-centric programming models, Operating Systems / Runtimes, and the software stack for quantum computers.
What You Will Do:
• Provide technical and administrative leadership for the CLaSS Group including, but not limited to, the topic areas listed above. Exhibit creativity and ingenuity that leads to significant scientific breakthroughs in an area of applied mathematics, computational mathematics, computer science, computational science, or a related field that is relevant to the Department of Energy (DOE) and LBNL.
• Secure funding for an active research and development program in his/her technical areas.
• Lead significant projects and programs in the group, take accountability for results, and represent the Department and Division to funding agencies.
In addition to the above, the Sr. Scientist will:
• Lead a group of staff members to maintain a recognized track record of performing independent scientific research in an area of programming languages, operating systems, communication libraries, quantum computing programming systems, and other components of an advanced parallel programming environment for scientific computing.
• Be responsible for setting new research directions that are responsive to evolving computing needs of DOE science.
• Organize and coordinate R&D projects and collaborations; provide technical leadership and develop strategies in support of the group’s research agenda.
• Work with other group leads in the division and science partners to strengthen collaborations with other scientific divisions at LBNL and elsewhere.
• Communicate strategic priorities, directions, group-wide research highlights and accomplishments upward to division and lab management, as well as to program management at DOE and other agencies.
• Perform personnel management activities, which include performance management, salary management, and recruitment of a diverse group that includes scientists, computer systems engineers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate student assistants, and affiliates.
• As a Group Lead, perform funding proposal development and submission, as well as conduct original high quality research, both as an individual contributor, as well as a mentor and support for these activities for other staff in the group.
What is Required:
• Ph.D. in Computer Science, or related fields, or overall equivalent experience and at least five years of experience conducting original research in one or more topic areas in the CLaSS portfolio.
• Established track record of research accomplishments and record of funding in these areas.
• Ability to facilitate setting strategic research directions within the group, and the broader lab and DOE scientific community.
• Experience with using and developing cutting edge software and hardware prototypes in a research environment.
• Highly self-motivated and willing to learn new technologies.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

• An established, independent, and internationally recognized record of outstanding research.
• Deep understanding of theory, implementation and optimization of programming languages.
• Deep understanding of advanced computer and HPC systems architecture (CPU/GPU, caches, memory systems and interconnect networks), and their contributions to the overall system performance.
