Senior Systems Engineer (Research & Development)

IDbyDNA is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join a research and development team. This is a fast-paced development environment driving improvements to our products and processes for next-generation sequencing-based pathogen detection through automation and technology development. We are looking for a self-motivated individual who can tackle difficult problems, develop innovative and creative solutions, and clearly communicate and effectively collaborate with the rest of the team.

Job Description

• Integrate a set of complex automated systems to support a workflow of production of critical materials for internal customers


• Manage building of a system for tracking production process, inventory, history, disposal, costing and shipments with direct input from the instruments and barcode labels


• Partner with technical leads in chemistry, assay design, software design and system hardware to automate complex pre-sequencing steps for successful commercialization of Explify® products


• Designing multifactorial experiments, execute and own data analysis and troubleshooting activities during system integration and system characterization phases


• Lead automation design from proof-of-concept and breadboard model to a functional solution with the “quality in design”, robustness, environmental and cost considerations
  

Basic Qualifications

• Master's or PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering or related field with 5+ years of hands-on working experience (10+ years for Master's)


• Laboratory experience with nucleic acids and proteins including transformation and detection


• Familiarity with commercial laboratory equipment for diagnostics and research use


• Hardware systems development with optics, fluidics, 3D printing, laser cutting


• Programming and data analysis in at least one of the following languages/environments: Python, C/C++, and MATLAB


• Modeling and CAD in COMSOL, SolidWorks or similar


• Nanofabrication/characterization including electron and ion beam microscopy (TEM, SEM, FIB), AFM, thin film deposition, and ellipsometry


• Proven research track record (in publications) utilizing several of the following: fluorescence microscopy, macromolecule biophysics, surface chemistry, cell culture, conventional biochemistry and microbiology wet lab techniques

Preferred Qualifications

• 3+ years experience serving in a commercial environment


• Experience with validation of automation systems in a regulated environment


• Prior experience in building Life Science hardware systems, including optical subsystems, mechanical subsystems, microfluidics, building test setups and troubleshooting hardware


• Knowledge of liquid handling systems (e.g. Tecan/Hamilton) and work with microplates


• Experience and strong understanding of basic molecular biology and enzymes


• Prior experience with nucleic acid sample extraction, purification, preparation, and characterization from a variety of biological sources
