Founded by Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg in 2015, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is a new kind of philanthropy that’s leveraging technology to help solve some of the world’s toughest challenges – from eradicating disease, to improving education, to reforming the criminal justice system. We are uniquely positioned to design, build, and scale software systems to help educators, scientists, and policy experts better address the myriad challenges they face. 

In our Science Initiative, our mission is to support science and technology that will help make it possible to cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by the end of the century. Interdisciplinary teams of physicians, biologists, computational scientists, and engineers can expand our understanding of the human body and illness — the very science behind medicine. CZI fosters collaboration between scientists and engineers, develops tools and technologies, and builds support for basic scientific research.

• napari - an open-source interactive, multi-dimensional image viewer for python


• IDseq - a metagenomics platform focused on delivering insights in infectious disease


• Starfish - an open-source image processing framework, enabling access to multiplex image-based transcriptomics analysis


• cellxgene - an open-source interactive data explorer for single-cell transcriptomics data


• Meta, a semantic discovery tool that provides a faster way to understand, organize and explore science through personalized feeds

As a Senior Software Engineer in the Imaging Program, you will build software tools to support our mission, focused on enabling researchers to gain a much deeper mechanistic understanding of biological systems. Those software tools will help researchers to visualize life’s processes at the necessary biological scales (systems, tissues, cells, proteins) and in the necessary context (e.g. protein interaction in cells, cell signaling in the living system), enable measurement and quantitative insights, and make and build on each other’s discoveries.  

You will have the opportunity to work closely with a collaborative team of scientists, engineers, product managers, designers and user researchers, building software that accelerates the pace of the biological sciences. This is an excellent opportunity for a person with extraordinary engineering skills and an interest in open source software and science.

You will

• Build analysis and visualization tools for exploring and analyzing biological imaging data


• Collaborate on open source software projects with the opportunity to contribute to major existing essential open source projects


• Work in a multi-disciplinary team, with engineers, scientists, product managers, designers and user researchers, to define product plans and strategy

You have

You have diverse and robust software engineering skills, an interest in biology and the CZI mission and a desire to build user-centered solutions.

• 5+ years of software design, development and delivery for both desktop and web applications


• 3+ years using relevant technologies including Python, front-end web, cloud and other related technologies


• Experience building Python GUI applications using PyQt/Qt or similar frameworks


• Experience building front-end web applications using Javascript frameworks like React or Angular


• Familiar with the scientific Python ecosystem (SciPy) and working on open source projects a plus


• Demonstrated ability to learn and use new methods and tools, define project requirements and ship completed projects


• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
